Stop Rent Control in Colorado
A committee is currently considering removing the legislation that prevents rent control. The following is from a letter I sent to several legislators on the committee. You could also send emails or you could write a letter to the editor.
Please stop HB 1140. This bill will remove our protections against rent control. In every location it has been tried, rent control has hurt tenants and property owners.
Rent control creates slums: With no ability to increase rents to cover increasing costs, landlords are unable to pay for regular maintenance and needed repairs. With no profits, buildings are allowed to deteriorate. Because of the minimal potential for income, new apartments aren’t built.
Rent control bankrupts small businesses: Owners who’ve put their life savings into buying an apartment building can lose everything. Without the ability to adjust rents to cover changing markets, increasing costs and inflation, owners cash flow is often squeezed to zero. Owning and managing an apartment building provides income. Rent control can eliminate these small businesses.
Rent control denies housing to the poor: In New York and other rent controlled areas renting an apartment requires an upfront payment of thousands of dollars. The supply of apartments is so tight that people have to pay for the right to rent an apartment.
Our current laws have helped us avoid the disaster of rent control. Don’t repeal them by passing HB 1140.

Rent control backfired in Greater Los Angeles, California. Rent Control needs to be removed or reformed. System has it all backwards. Relocation is $17,000.00. Why should an owner pay relocation? I don’t understand? What has the tenant given to the owner? Landlords provide housing and for doing so owner gets penalized? In what country we live on? Where is our Freedom? Government control private people’s building just because they were build before 1977. Shouldn’t this be the other way around and old buildings be excempt to be able to renovate them? Instead the system makes them live in their deteriorated unit to punish tenants to live in poverty just to keep the low rent. Who make these laws? Monkeys?
