Letter from Jack to the Denver Post Editors:
The headline read, “Library secure for kid porn” [Post 2007-11-18].
That’s a heck of a headline. I think that what you meant to say was,
“Clearing the road for US Att’y. Troy Eid’s assault on the Fourth
Amendment.”
As Harry S Truman said [as quoted in Plain Speaking by Merle
Miller], “I feel that if our constitutional system ever fails, it will
be because people got scared and turned hysterical and someone
in power will demagogue them right into a police state of some
kind.”
What Truman failed to anticipate was our day and age when
techniques for using the media to mobilize the masses against
their own civil liberties are available to every second- or
third-rate jack-in-office.
