Ron Paul?
If you’ve spent any time at Ron Paul meetups and talking to Ron Paul organizers (as I have, just to see what’s going on), if you do go to the Thanksgiving, expect to be hit up for money, but most of all, hit up to change your party registration. The deadline for the Republican caucuses is Dec 5 and the Republicans are looking to make a big dent in our registrations (on which our ballot access for the State of Colorado is based).
Those believing that they can switch back quickly are in error. Rep. Caucuses are held in Feb ‘08 timeframes, and you have to be a registered Republican to vote there, *and* the Republican Convention is in September, so folks will be urged to stay registered Republicans because who knows what can happen at Convention (that carrot has a long string)… but you have to be a registered Libertarian by Dec 9 to
qualify to vote in the LP.
While none of us have many objections to Ron Paul (other than the fact that he won’t run as a Libertarian), the issue of registration will take you out of any voting options for either State or National LP Conventions.
I expect that most folks who say they are Libertarian (registered or not, Ron Paul supporter or not) would come to Convention to hear the speakers and attend the Constitution class (at State Convention, I believe), but folks who register Republican in Colorado will not be allowed to vote at either Convention.
