LPCO 2007 Convention

We missed you at the 2007 convention of the Libertarian Party of Colorado. Travis Nicks was re-elected Chairman for another term, and a celebrity speaker (Badnarik) emphasized the need for passion in performance for the commonweal. Nicks does an exceptional job in herding cats, and the state direction seems to be improving during his administration.

Highlight of the event was the nerd factor, that allowed participants to experience training for their next term in the legislature (wherever, whenever). Steve Yates of ISI Learning (that’s a “plug” for an “attaboy” guy) provided individual voting devices that enhanced the processing, and contributed significantly to timely resolutions. Delegates on the Western Slope (in Montrose) participated via a real time internet connection, with slightly degraded audio. Improved communications appear to be a hallmark for last year’s LPCO administration.

Many of the traditional activist cadre for our progress did not attend—some important past leaders who contributed to our sustaining influence in Colorado politics. The new state staff seems well integrated for future mission achievements. See the official reports (we hope) at: http://www.lpcolorado.org.

Of particular interest to me was a post-session comment by Frank Atwood about participatory leadership.

He cited as source Richard Burke at the Portland OR national convention, sic:

The triumvirate of leadership consists of integrated intellectuals, activists, and administrators, points of a triangle whose ideal center is a charismatic implementer. An example was the USSR team of Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.

Atwood made the point that all points of the triangle are important to successful political achievement of goals, and that each person in a social milieu may contribute with particular talents for the common mission. We all must participate and contribute in our special fashions in order reach our destination.

You can’t affect change if you don’t show up (and vote)! Please keep this in mind for the challenges of 2008. Michelle Pogue made a plea for contributing assistance in the hosting of the 2008 national LP convention here. (See LPCO Web site.)

Apparently, some non- (?) attendees were “put off” by the (exorbitant) $25 luncheon charge. In my opinion, the venue fee was worth the notable excellent service by the Doubletree staff.
